Description A fully-funded PhD position is available in Matthias Wilms’ research group at the University of Calgary, Canada. The goal of the PhD project is to develop new machine learning models for medical image analysis that combine discriminative capabilities (e.g., for disease classification) with generative abilities (e.g., for explainable AI purposes). The project will extend our recent work on normalizing flows (see [1] for details).
Successful candidates will be part of the Biomedical Engineering graduate program at the University of Calgary and need to fulfill the program’s general admission requirements [2]. Moreover, candidates are expected to have:
- Obtained a Master's degree (or are near to completing one) in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field with a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
- Excellent math skills
- Research experience in machine learning-based medical image analysis or a related field (e.g., computer vision, core machine learning) with at least one first-authored conference or journal publication
- Significant hands-on experience with modern software frameworks for deep learning like Tensorflow or Pytorch
- Programming skills in Python
Calgary, Canada’s fastest growing major city, is vibrant and multicultural with a population of approximately one million [3]. Situated less than one hour from the Rocky Mountains, Banff National Park, and Lake Louise, Calgary offers great quality of life and outstanding recreational activities such as hiking and skiing. Our group is part of the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary and affiliated with the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, which gives us access to various unique imaging data sets while also providing ample opportunities for close collaborations with other basic researchers and clinicians.
If interested, then please email a cover letter that briefly describes your motivation and research interests, a CV, transcripts, and publications directly to:
