Description
Johns Hopkins University seeks to recruit two Bloomberg Distinguished Professors (BDPs) who will lead and collaborate to create a diverse and cohesive AI & Society Cluster.
The joint complexity of artificial intelligence (AI) systems and the societies into which they are integrated demands a multidisciplinary approach. The AI & Society Cluster will include scholars from across the social sciences, engineering and technology, to address key challenges from multiple perspectives, to help ensure the just and equitable integration of AI technology in society. This cluster bridges core strengths of computer sciences, social sciences, and ethics to mitigate risks of injustice and maximize benefits of societal good. They will focus on AI research in areas of strategic opportunity for Johns Hopkins researchers to advance critical subfields and create new tools with an emphasis on improving the human condition.
For these two tenured, endowed professorships, we seek full or associate professors (or equivalent senior positions in government or industry) who are dynamic leaders in their fields and who have disciplinary training and multidisciplinary experience in foundational, application, and policy research, and program building in one or more of the following subfields:
AI Ethics & Human Values
AI Policy & Governance
Participatory Engagement
Impact of AI on Information & Democracy
Cultural Competence
Impact of AI on Health
AI-Human Interaction
Social Robotics
Qualifications
We are especially interested in leaders who have skills in one or more of the above sub-fields and demonstrated ability to lead innovative research and training programs in a multidisciplinary, inter-divisional, collaborative community; to articulate strategic directions and areas of scientific growth for the AI & Society mission; to secure major external grants from federal agencies such as the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health; and to work across disciplines, including social sciences, humanities, computer science, engineering, public health, and biomedical sciences.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit a cover letter; a research abstract of maximum one page that also includes elements of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI); curriculum vitae; and representative publications. A detailed research statement and additional information may be requested later in the process. Questions may be directed to [email protected]. Review of applications will begin in January 2023, and continue until the positions are filled. Appointments will commence as early as July 1, 2023.
